It is interesting that in old cold cases such as the 1948 Somerton Man an anthropologist gave his suggestion as to the identity which has subsequently been proved wrong.
"The general resemblance between this person and the Unknown Man is extremely strong, but specific similarities between their ears (again) and a mole on their faces was enough to convince Adelaide University’s “internationally renowned anatomist and biological anthropologist Professor Maciej Henneberg” that the two were a perfect match. He was wrong when they decided Charles Webb was the body from DNA.
In fact if you see images of Charles Webb in his 20s then there was a strong likeness to HC Reynolds - Henneberg's candidate.
In another cold case the 1970 Isdal woman - staff in a hostel identified American Jane Wallentine as the body. But the police accepted that a postcard sent to an anthropologists family proved she was alive. He was famous 'in Norway' for his journeys with Thor Heyerdahl.
But again you wonder whether an anthropologist had identified a person who was a lookalike for a body.
